How Do You Help Struggling Readers Who May Be Dyslexic?

I use the Susan Barton System, which is an Orton-Gillingham approach that is multi-sensory, research based, and approved by California Department of Education. This system can be used with or without a formal diagnosis.

What Do I Need To Bring To My On-Line Session?

Every Session: Your student should have a whiteboard, markers, pencil, eraser and paper.

Nice To Have Handy: Scissors, glue stick, and coloring tools. I will let you know via Google Classroom if our work will need these items.

How Long Is A Session?

Generally, a session lasts between 45-50 minutes depending on the assignment and the student's endurance.

Do You Offer "Parent/Tutor" Conferences?

I believe we are a team so we definitely need to communicate. Parents can email me or we can chat at the end of a session for a quick question or update. Also, I welcome any communication from the classroom teacher in order to provide a more personalized learning goal.

What Can I As The Parent Do To Support My Student's Sessions?

Here are a few practical suggestions for success:

Make sure they have all of their supplies handy and are logged on.
Be sure your student has a quiet space with as few distractions as possible, a nice flat table top area to work on that has enough room for their supplies, and a method to organize their papers. This could mean a folder, or a paper tray and paper clips.
Keep communication open by sharing information between your student's school and me.
Help your student to have a "Growth Mindset".

What Is A "Growth Mindset"?

According to Carol Dweck, the psychologist who developed the concept, a growth mindset is the belief one can learn or become more proficient in a skill through hard work and perseverence.
