For a student to feel successful, they need to have the confidence that they are capable of "figuring it out." That kind of magic happens when they feel a connection with their teacher. Students need to feel safe: safe to make mistakes and safe to ask questions. The teacher needs to understand the student so they can tell if a student is frustrated or exhausted from exerting so much effort, even if there is little progress to show. Students will engage in learning and set personal goals if they believe in their abilities. That's a main part of my job as the teacher. Their success depends on how well I can connect with them.
